Two thousand and five marks the centennial celebration of the birth of two of America’s great songwriters – Harold Arlen and Jule Styne. To celebrate the occasion, Lyric Stage’s DALLAS DIVAS! will sing the beautiful melodies of these tunesmiths in the ninth annual DALLAS DIVAS! concert. For the first time in Diva history, the lovely ladies will be joined by the Irving Symphony Orchestra.

Born February 15, 1905, in Buffalo, New York, the son of a cantor, Harold Arlen grew to become one of the greatest song writers of the twentieth century. His famous song from The Wizard of Oz, “Over the Rainbow,” was recently named the number one song of the century. In addition to his classic score for The Wizard of Oz, Arlen composed the Broadway shows BLOOMER GIRL, ST. LOUIS WOMAN, HOUSE OF FLOWERS and JAMAICA.

Jule Styne was born December 31, 1905 in London. He moved with his family to Chicago in 1912 where he had a short career as a piano prodigy. A drill-press accident desensitized a finger and he switched from the concert hall to the burlesque pit. He traveled to New York where he worked as a vocal coach, ultimately landing in Hollywood where he wrote the hit “I Don’t Want to Walk Without You” with Frank Loesser. His many Broadway shows include HIGH BUTTON SHOES, PETER PAN, GYPSY and FUNNY GIRL.

Lyric Stage Founding Producer Steven Jones has assembled 12 of North Texas’ finest leading ladies for the ninth edition of this highly anticipated annual event. The 2005 Divas include Mary Gilbreath, Stacia Goad-Malone, Natalie King, Ada Lynn, Amy Mills, Pamela Peadon, Jennifer Pasion, Cara Serber, Sally Soldo, Amy Stevenson, Wendy Welch and Dara Whitehead. Dallas’ Diva of Directors, Cheryl Denson, will stage the glamorous evening. Jay Dias, conductor of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS, SUNSET BLVD. and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA will conduct The Irving Symphony Orchestra.

The DALLAS DIVAS! will be together for two performances only, Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12 @ 8:00 PM in the Irving Arts Center’s Carpenter Performance Hall, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. Tickets are $25.00 and are available by calling the box office @ 972-252-2787 or by ordering online at www.ci.irving.tx.us/arts.
