LYRIC STAGE PRESENTS
JANE EYRE
April 28-May 13, 2006
Lyric Stage closes the 2005-2006 season with Paul Gordon and John Caird’s stirring musical adaptation of the Charlotte Bronte classic, JANE EYRE, April 28-May 13, 2006. Filled with soaring melodies and a romantic lyricism uncommon in the modern Broadway musical, JANE EYRE is a sweeping love story, breath-taking in its scope and beauty.
JANE EYRE is the story of an orphan girl who overcomes an abusive childhood and the death of her best friend to become the governess of Thornfield Hall. At Thornfield Hall, she falls in love with Edward Rochester, an Earl with a dark secret. On their wedding day she discovers his secret: he already has a wife, an insane lunatic hidden in the attic. Shocked, Jane flees to her childhood home, to find that her aunt is dying. Even though her aunt had treated her cruelly as a child, Jane forgives her. In her absolution of her aunt, and the realization that she is someone who can love and be loved in exchange, she returns to Thornfield Hill, only to discover it has burned to the ground and Rochester has been blinded. Jane and Rochester are married and soon Rochester’s sight partially returns so that he is able to see his new-born son.
The book of this musical was written by John Caird, co-director/adapter of the Broadway smash LES MISERABLES. Lyric Stage's Founding Producer Steven Jones first saw JANE EYRE during its Toronto run in 1996. “I loved it. I was in Toronto to see the pre-Broadway engagements of RAGTIME and JANE EYRE. I saw JANE EYRE the first night and RAGTIME the following afternoon. I was so moved by JANE EYRE that I returned to the Royal Alexandra Theatre to see it a second time.” After sold out runs in Toronto and at the La Jolla Playhouse, JANE EYRE opened at Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre on December 10, 2000 and was nominated for 5 Tony Awards. Lyric Stage’s production will be only the third professional production since its Broadway engagement.
Candace Evans will direct the Lyric Stage mounting of JANE EYRE with musical direction by Scott A. Eckert. The design team includes Wade Giampa (sets), Susan A. White (lights) and Billie Boston (costumes). Julie Stirman will play Jane opposite Greg Dulcie’s Rochester with Dara Whitehead Allen, Deborah Brown, Kristi Rowan, Laurie Bulaoro, Greg Allen, Keith Ferguson, Theo Wischhusen, Caitlin Daniels, Beth Albright, Steven Hall, Laura Joyal, Mary McElree, Michael Madrinkian, Claire Fowler and Carley Rosemore rounding out the cast.
