Since 1994, New Yorkers have been serenaded
by New York City Center's Encores!® Great American Musicals
in Concert, a celebration of the rarely-heard works of America's
most important composers and lyricists. Until now, Dallas audiences
have not had that opportunity. That changes on Tuesday, September
12, 2006, when Lyric Stage presents Stephen Sondheim’s
SWEENEY TODD in the glorious Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.
SWEENEY TODD is the rare instance of a musical
thriller, and north Texas audiences will get to experience it
the way it was meant to be performed. The 35-member cast and
35-piece orchestra, which will soar in the acoustically spectacular
hall, are sure to present the concert event of the season. Although
sophisticated and macabre, SWEENEY TODD nevertheless has a great
sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howling funny moments
of dark humor. Audiences will find themselves laughing hysterically
one moment and gasping in surprise the next.
Composer/lyricist
Stephen Sondheim and book writer Hugh Wheeler’s chilling,
suspenseful, heart-pounding SWEENEY TODD recounts the murderous
barber-ism and culinary crime of the unjustly exiled barber
who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the
lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His
thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers,
and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs
soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious
new meat pie recipe!
The original production of SWEENEY TODD opened
March 1, 1979, at Broadway’s Uris Theatre (now the Gershwin)
and ran for 557 performances, winning 9 Tony Awards, including
Best Musical. The current Broadway revival, starring Patti LuPone
and Michael Cerveris, opened November 3, 2005, and is still
running at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
Julie Johnson and Greg Dulice will star as
Mrs. Lovett and Sweeney Todd in Lyric Stage’s production.
The cast includes Dara Whitehead Allen as Johanna, Shane Peterman
as Anthony, Michael J. Ross as Tobias, Jeffrey Snider as Judge
Turpin, Jackson Ross Best, Jr. as Pirelli Stephen Austin as
the Beadle and Miranda Lind as the Beggar Woman. The principals
will be joined by a 27-member chorus and 35-piece Lyric Stage
orchestra under the baton of conductor Jay Dias. Cheryl Denson
will stage this special concert event.
