Lyric Stage turns 15 on July 8, 2008 and what
better way to celebrate than with a Broadway legend? On July
9, 10 and 11 @ 8:00 pm, Betty Buckley will perform Broadway
by Request with her pianist Seth Rudetsky in the Irving
Arts Center's Dupree Theater. Ms. Buckley took New York by storm
in February when she premiered Broadway by Request at Feinstein's.
Her Lyric Stage engagement is the first time audiences outside
of New York City will have the opportunity to hear what Entertainment
Weekly calls "the finest voice in musical theater today"
sing "Memory" and all of her Broadway hits in one
evening.
Betty Buckley won a Tony Award for her performance as Grizabella,
the Glamour Cat, in Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS. She received
her second Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a musical
fo r
her performance as Hesione in TRIUMPH OF LOVE, and an Olivier
Award nomination for her interpretation of Norma Desmond in
the London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's SUNSET BOULEVARD,
which she repeated to more rave reviews on Broadway.
Her other Broadway credits include 1776, PIPPIN, SONG AND DANCE,
THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and CARRIE. Off-Broadway credits
include Lincoln Center's ELEGIES, the original NYSF production
of EDWIN DROOD, THE EROS TRILOGY and JUNO SWANS. Regional credits
include GYPSY, THREEPENNY OPERA, CAMINO REAL and BUFFALO GAL.
She starred in the London production of PROMISES, PROMISES.
Her film appearances include her debut in Brian de Palma's
screen version of Stephen King's CARRIE, Bruce Beresford's TENDER
MERCIES, Roman Polanski's FRANTIC, Woody Allen's ANOTHER WOMAN
and Lawrence Kasden's WYATT EARP. She recently completed THE
HAPPENING for M. Night Shyamalan to be released June, 2008.
Most recently, Buckley appeared on the 2006 Kennedy Center
Honors. She has also starred in the HBO series OZ and as Abby
Bradford in the hit series EIGHT IS ENOUGH. She has appeared
in the CBS series WITHOUT A TRACE, the NBC series LAW &
ORDER: SVU, the FOX series THE JURY and MONK for the USA network.
She has received two Emmy Nominations.
Buckley has completed 11 CD's, among them QUINTESSENCE and
BETTY BUCKLEY 1967 and the Grammy Nominated STARS AND THE MOON,
BETTY BUCKLEY LIVE AT THE DONMAR.
For over thirty-five years Ms. Buckley has been a teacher of
scene study and song interpretation, giving workshops in Manhattan
and various universities and performing arts conservatories
around the country. She has been a faculty member in the theatre
department of the University of Texas at Arlington, the Terry
Schreiber Acting School in New York City and currently at the
Casa Manana Theatre in Fort Worth, TX.
In March of 2007, Ms. Buckley was inducted into the Texas Film
Hall of Fame in Austin.
Tickets are $35 for 2008-2009 Lyric Stage subscribers and $55
for non subscribers. Performances are Wednesday, July 9, Thursday
July 10 and Friday July 11 @ 8 PM in the Irving Arts Center's
Dupree Theater.
